🇸🇰 96.4% of Slovakia's web is open to AI — and its travel sector blocks the most

Of 139,427 live Slovak websites, 4,988 (3.58%) block an AI crawler — 16th of 43 countries, more open than most of Eastern Europe. But 92% have made no AI choice at all.

96.4%open to AI crawlers

Slovakia sits on the open side of Eastern Europe. Of 139,427 live Slovak sites, 3.58% block an AI crawler — 16th of 43 countries, more open than Poland (4.45%), Hungary (4.32%) and Ukraine (4.89%), and just behind neighbour Czechia (2.89%).

But like the rest of the region, Slovakia is open mostly by inertia: 92% of sites neither block AI nor declare a policy, and conscious opt-in is just 4.54%. The travel sector blocks the most (10.78%), followed by attractions (6.3%) — the tourism reflex again — while the press is close to the national norm at 8.79%, unusually relaxed for the region.

Slovak blocking is fairly precise: 8.7% of GPTBot-blockers accidentally lost ChatGPT Search, a little above the global rate. Slovakia's profile is a familiar Central European one — open surface, silent majority, tourism-defensive core.

The three numbers that matter

96.57%
AI Training Exposure
share of sites NOT blocking any AI training bot (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, CCBot…) — their content can be used for model training.
98.54%
AI Search Visibility
share of sites reachable by AI search crawlers (OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot…) — they can appear in AI answers.
8.17%
AI Policy Maturity
share of sites with ANY conscious, machine-readable AI signal (llms.txt, ai.txt, robots AI rules, ToS clause). Low = the web hasn't decided yet.

Where Slovakia stands in the world

💬 16th of 43 — more open than Poland, Hungary and Ukraine, just behind Czechia. Slovakia and Czechia anchor the open end of Eastern Europe.

The four AI postures of Slovakia's web

Every website falls into one of four groups, based on what it blocks and what it declares:

92.02%
Open by silence
doesn't block AI and declares nothing — no decision has been made. This is the real story: the vast majority.
4.54%
Consciously open
doesn't block AI and publishes an explicit policy file (llms.txt / ai.txt) — a deliberate yes.
1.98%
Controlled access
blocks training bots but stays visible to AI search — the technically mature strategy.
1.46%
AI-dark
blocks AI search crawlers too — protected, but disappearing from AI answers.
Open by silence: 92.02%Consciously open: 4.54%Controlled access: 1.98%AI-dark: 1.46%92.02%Open by silence
💬 92% silent, only 4.54% consciously open — regional-typical passivity. The web is open because it was never closed, not because it was opened.

The ChatGPT-invisibility paradox

4,385GPTBot ⛔
383+ OAI-SearchBot ⛔
8.7%ChatGPT Search ✕

4,385 Slovakia websites block GPTBot to keep their content out of AI training. But 383 of them — 8.7% — ALSO block OAI-SearchBot, most likely by accident. Those sites have removed themselves from ChatGPT Search results entirely: protected from training, but invisible where their customers now search.

GPTBot (training) and OAI-SearchBot (ChatGPT Search) are independent robots.txt tokens — blocking one does not block the other.

💬 8.7% accidental self-exclusion — modestly above the global norm.

Bytespider is ByteDance's (TikTok) crawler — it ignores robots.txt more often than the majors, yet it is among the most-blocked.

Slovakia news sites block AI 2.5× more often than the national average (8.79% vs 3.58%) — publishers are the most defensive segment of the web.

💬 Travel (10.78%) and attractions (6.3%) lead — the tourism reflex — while the Slovak press (8.79%) is notably relaxed compared to Czech (14.2%) or Nordic newsrooms.

The e-commerce exposure

28,205 Slovakia online shops are open to AI crawlers (98.3% of 28,681). Their product content can already be read, compared and recommended by AI assistants — whether they know it or not.

The trend starts here

This is the baseline edition (2026-07-13). Piperic re-measures continuously; the next edition will show how fast Slovakia's web is closing — or opening.

💬 Slovakia begins on the open side of its region, tourism-defensive and largely silent. The next edition tracks whether the silent majority starts to decide.

For journalists — press kit

“Slovakia is more open than its neighbours Poland and Hungary, but it shares the regional trait: a vast silent majority. Ninety-two percent of Slovak sites have never decided anything about AI — the web is open because nobody closed it,”
— said Attila Rácz-Akácosi, founder of Piperic.

Methodology

Sample: 139,427 live, content-validated websites (Slovakia, ccTLD-based assignment), out of 41,818,678 live domains analysed worldwide. “Live” = HTTP 200 and not parked. “Blocks AI” = the site's robots.txt disallows at least one of 14 known AI crawlers. llms.txt/ai.txt = the file exists at the site root. Snapshot: 2026-07-13 (frozen — numbers do not move with the live crawl). Full-web note: these figures cover the ENTIRE live web including the long tail; industry headlines like “25% of top sites block GPTBot” measure only large publishers — both are true, they measure different things. Country assignment via ccTLD under-counts .com/.org sites; treat US figures as indicative.
