He Whakaputanga Moana is the first Indigenous-led Declaration recognizing whales as sentient beings with inherent rights. Grounded in Te Ao Māori and Polynesian values, it establishes legal protections, guardianship, and pathways for implementing whale rights through Indigenous leadership, law, and science—with partners including NYU More-Than-Human Life (MOTH) Program and Project CETI.
