The Meteora is close to the town of Kalambaka, about two hours from the port of Igoumenitsa on the Greek mainland oppsite Corfu. Meteora means suspended in the air and this collection of weathered rock pinnacles, believed to be about 60 million years old, has been home to monks since the 9th century. The oldest monasteries date back to the early 12th century.
