Balanced mix design (BMD) for asphalt construction is used to design an optimum asphalt content between problems with rutting on one end and cracking on the other. Tests that are used to determine these parameters are the Hamburg wheel tracking test, the overlay test, the ideal cracking test and shear bond strength testing.
