When Dionysus travelled to Attica he was received as a guest by Icarius. Icarius showed such fantastic hospitality that Dionysus was moved and wanted to repay Icarius with something very special. Dionysus gave Icarius a branch of a grape vine and taught him the art of winemaking. Thus, Icarius was the first person to bring the cultivation of the vine and wine to the ancient world.
